Why do you need an upconverting DVD player if the HD TV already upconverts input signals? - hd upconverting dvd players better than i expected
I understand that the DVD player is connected better (converted 720p/1080i), but the upconversion is not the same as the HDTV makes the input signal?

I sell electronics. I wondered the same thing. I have a lot in both directions and the picture actually looks better when you see the creation of a DVD conversion. The output-digital converter also helps, because the non-up-converting DVD player Digital video is output. Not the best answer, but what I have.
